Generational Spirits
A friend called to tell me he was bringing a young lady to our evening service. He expressed concern for her because she was manifesting a demonic presence at church. As I saw Stephen[1] come through the door with this lady; I walked over to him and said, “Hi Stephen, how are you?” He responded, “Hi, Gene, this is Diane.” I turned and said, “Hi Diane, how are you?” She looked at me and replied, “WE’RE fine! How are you?” It was very apparent to me from this exchange that a demonic spirit was actively present. The Holy Spirit revealed to me it was generational.
Over the next three weeks, as we prayed over Diane, we removed the generational spirits as they started revealing themselves. During this time, her mother came with her and also showed evidence of the same spirits. This is not unusual because generational spirits follow from older generations to current family members. Their roots are evident by traits and behaviors such as bitterness, fear, infirmity and disease, hate, perversion, addictions. We prayed with Diane for about two weeks, and she was beginning to receive freedom from the demonic manifestations. In the third week, as I saw her walk into the meeting room, I walked over, took her hand, and said, “Hi, Diane. How are you?” “I’m doing fine Gene, how are you?” Her response was so different from our first meeting; the real Diane was speaking out! The three spirits I initially discerned were cast out. They did not bother her anymore. Unfortunately, her mother never brought her back, so we could not continue praying for her.
Sometimes this happens. People don’t return, or we never hear back, which is disappointing because we earnestly desire to help them be entirely free of the demons and learn to walk in their freedom. We do not always have the opportunity to uncover the source of the torment—when it first started or what triggered it. It could be a trauma, a loss, an accident, or a significant life incident as far back as childhood, even in the womb, or as in Diane’s case, generational. This insight helps us know how to pray and close the sin pathways the demons entered to bring affliction. However, regardless of our limitations or circumstances, Jesus carefully watches over His lambs and continues to work in intricate detail throughout their life circumstances to draw them closer to Himself and bring total freedom.
“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), to be with you forever—the Spirit of Truth … for He lives with you [constantly] and will be in you.” John 14:16, 17b AMP
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; For you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.” Psalm 23 NKJV
